Over more than sixty years Winters maintained a prominent and admired presence on the British jazz scene. His professional work began in the 1930s alongside bandleaders Ray Fox, Bert Ambrose, Lew Stone, and Ray Noble. A 1934 date placed him with Coleman Hawkins, and he led his own session two years afterward. Between 1948 and 1955 he held a steady post at London’s Hatchett’s Club while also taking freelance studio calls and theater-orchestra jobs. In the early 1980s he joined British cornetist Digby Fairweather in Kettner’s Five. Winters appeared on a 1989 recording with octogenarian saxophonist Benny Waters, the saxophonist’s final European session. He also contributed to Fairweather’s 1994 tribute to trumpeter/singer Nat Gonella, With Nat in Mind.
