Titles emerged in 2004 when Connecticut guitarist Brad Amorosino exited his prior rock band to pursue a solo project that would define the group’s diverse, pop-based indie rock. Drummer John Miller joined shortly thereafter, prompting the pair to cut a self-titled debut with bassist Adrian van de Graaff. Welcome Home Records, a Connecticut imprint, issued that album in September 2006; once Matt Wilson later entered on guitar and pedal steel, the band chose to discard its existing songs and begin anew. In early 2007 the musicians settled into a house along the New Haven shore and started writing a second full-length. Engineer Greg Giorgio, who had previously worked on the National’s Boxer, assisted with the sessions, leading to the July 2008 release of Up with the Sun on New Haven’s Safety Meeting Records.
