Norway's TNT set itself apart from standard hair metal groups through elevated musicianship, delivering a progressive twist on pop-metal that stemmed chiefly from Tony Harnell's extraordinary vocal range and Ronni Le Tekrø's precise guitar work. The group first assembled in Trondheim during 1982 with vocalist Dag Ingebrigtsen, also known as D.D. Dynamite, bassist Steiner Eikum, and drummer Morten "Diesel" Dahl. Their self-titled debut appeared that same year exclusively in Norway and featured lyrics entirely in Norwegian. Poor sales prompted Eikum's exit, with Morty Black stepping in as bassist, after which New York-born Tony Harnell took over vocals from Ingebrigtsen. Harnell made his recorded debut on the band's first album aimed at wider audiences, 1984's Knights of the New Thunder, listed under the more Norwegian-sounding credit Tony Hansen.

Momentum built strongly with 1987's Tell No Tales, though drummer Dahl soon departed and was succeeded by Kenneth Odiin. The 1989 release Intuition built upon those earlier advances, yet Polygram soon dropped support and left the band without a label. Odiin chose to stay with his family, leading to American drummer John Macaluso joining for 1992's Realized Fantasies on Atlantic. Internal tensions between members favoring greater global reach and those content with domestic success caused the group to split. Macaluso later joined Riot, Le Tekrø and Black formed the prog-rock project Vagabond, and Harnell fronted the cover-oriented Morning Wood.

Reuniting in 1996 with Harnell, Le Tekrø, Black, drummer Frode Hansen, and keyboardist Dag Stokke, the band issued Firefly in 1997. Harnell then took a one-year break before returning in 1998, allowing TNT to release the more alternative-rock-focused Transistor the next year. My Religion arrived in 2004 and revived the glam metal approach of their earlier peak period, followed in 2005 by the similar All the Way to the Sun. The New Territory in 2007 and Atlantis in 2008 came out through Swedish indie label Bonnier Amigo, later renamed Cosmos Music, while the band's tenth studio album appeared in 2010 as A Farewell to Arms in Japan and as Engine elsewhere.
