Based in Ypsilanti, Michigan—a community positioned between Ann Arbor and Detroit—producer and DJ Todd Osborn initially drew wider notice under the Soundmurderer alias. There he issued fiercely energetic ragga jungle tracks through his own Rewind imprint alongside SK-1, whose real name is Tadd Mullinix and who also records as Dabrye and James T. Cotton. Recognition for the Soundmurderer project reached its height with the 2003 Violent Turd mix Wired for Sound, a set that raced across sixty selections in under seventy minutes. In the preceding year, material credited to Todd Osborn and Osborne began appearing on Throw and on Spectral Sound, the Ghostly International subsidiary, in the techno and house idioms. During that same period Osborn teamed with Brian Gillespie under the name Starski & Clutch, issuing several ghetto-tech singles via Databass. Occasional further Osborne releases on Spectral continued through 2008 and culminated in a self-titled album whose tracks offered distinctive reinterpretations of house, techno, and electronic pop. Osborn has additionally worked with Mullinix as TNT, producing acid-house tracks and remixes that applied the same knowing yet respectful attitude the earlier Soundmurderer & SK-1 work brought to drum’n’bass, and he has put out limited cassette recordings under the names Musk and Superstructure.
