Sydney Edmund Evans came into the world in Harringay, London, England, in 1901 and left it on 12 March 1978 in London, England. His entry into music began with work as a pianist for silent films, after which he moved into conducting and songwriting on a large scale. One of his creations, the 1931 song ‘Lady Of Spain’, became one of the decade’s major international successes. Further recognition arrived with ‘If’ and ‘My September Love’. Among his other compositions stand ‘Ballet Romantique’, ‘I’ll Sing To You’, ‘Somewhere Down In Brittany’, ‘Dreamy Devon’, ‘Valencia’, ‘Forty Million Churchills’, ‘There’s A Lovely Lake In London’, and ‘Ev’rywhere’, the last of these written with Larry Khan and named Most Popular Song at the first Ivor Novello Award ceremony in 1955.
