Ricky Skaggs once hailed Tom Adams as "one of the best banjo players ever," a distinction that immediately set the musician apart. Adams first drew widespread notice as a member of Jimmy Martin & the Sunny Mountain Boys before joining the Johnson Mountain Boys, where the group blended striking progressive bluegrass with deeply traditional material. His debut solo effort, Right Hand Man, appeared on Rounder Records in 1990. After the Johnson Mountain Boys issued their final album in 1993, Adams collaborated with Lynn Morris, Blue Highway, and Rhonda Vincent. Rounder released his follow-up solo album, Adams County Banjo, in 2001, further broadening his distinctive approach to the boundaries of bluegrass.
