Biography
Tom Gullion took up the saxophone at the age of ten under the guidance of Larry Kirkman and Harry Miedema. At Indiana University he worked with David N. Baker and made his first appearance on record with Baker’s ensemble, the 21st Century Bebop Band. At twenty-two Gullion received his initial professional engagement when J.J. Johnson brought him into the band. He subsequently returned to Indiana to complete his studies before relocating to New York alongside his wife, a classical violinist. When she secured an orchestra position in Spain, the couple settled there; Gullion performed with several local ensembles, cut an album with the group Clunia, and contributed to television and film scores. They returned to the United States in 1995 and established themselves in Chicago, where Gullion enrolled at Northwestern University to pursue a master’s degree. He tracked his debut solo album, Cat’s Cradle, in 1997, and Naim Records issued the recording in 1999.
