Biography
Born Thomas Mansergh Pickering on 8 August 1921 in Burra, South Australia, he first mastered an array of reed instruments with particular attention to the clarinet. During the late 1930s and 1940s he performed traditional jazz in numerous Australian locales. Across the decades that followed he sustained an active career, retaining his allegiance to earlier idioms while proving equally adept on tenor saxophone in mainstream contexts. His performances and recordings remained steady into the 1980s, and several honors later acknowledged his lasting influence on the nation’s musical culture.
