Tomás Improta ranks among the leading pianists currently working in Brazil and has performed alongside Gal Costa, Djavan, Caetano Veloso, Maria Bethânia, and Chico Buarque. Jornal da Música proclaimed him Brazil’s finest pianist, and overseas specialty magazines likewise singled him out for his two appearances at the Montreux Festivals in Switzerland. He received a Gramado Festival prize for the soundtrack he composed for the film Bar Esperança. After that period he turned his attention to independent projects. His wide-ranging recordings reflect the influence of Heitor Villa-Lobos, Béla Bartók, and bossa nova, the latter evident in Certas Mulheres.
