Biography
A foundational figure among Japanese rock icons, Tomoyasu Hotei helped establish the influential J-rock group Boowy before carving out an enduring path as a solo performer, frequent collaborator, and screen actor. He entered the world in Takasaki, Japan, on February 1, 1962, and soon relocated to Tokyo after completing his schooling, where he crossed paths with Kyosuke Himuro. Together they organized auditions that led to Boowy’s formation in 1981; the band swiftly rose to prominence within the J-rock scene and moved millions of albums. Following Boowy’s 1988 dissolution, Hotei launched a solo career that proved equally potent. He joined Koji Kikkawa in the duo project Complex, which issued two successful albums, while sharing stages and studio sessions with David Bowie, Andy Mackay, and Chris Spedding. His first solo release, Guitarhythm, appeared in October 1988 and inaugurated a remarkably productive period that yielded fifteen studio albums, more than twenty singles, three career retrospectives, and several live recordings, alongside contributions to video-game soundtracks and an acting résumé. The 2007 album Ambivalent extended that momentum by entering the top ten of the Japanese charts.
