In 1982 Bauhaus guitarist Daniel Ash launched Tones on Tail as a side project, recruiting bassist Glen Campling, who also worked as a roadie for Bauhaus. After the band’s 1983 breakup Ash turned his full attention to the new outfit and added former Bauhaus drummer Kevin Haskins. The music moved freely between light rock, funk, and atmospheric synth textures. Growing unhappy with Campling, Ash explored a Bauhaus reunion, but when Peter Murphy withdrew, Ash, Haskins, and ex-Bauhaus bassist David J—who had been working with the Jazz Butcher—formed Love and Rockets instead. Tones on Tail re-formed in 2024, bringing in Diva Dompé, Haskins’ daughter, on bass.
