Biography
An acclaimed a cappella quartet based in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul area, Tonic Sol-Fa has built its reputation on exuberant performances that fuse pop and jazz through intricate vocal harmonies. Since emerging during the 1990s, the ensemble has maintained an active schedule of touring and recording, delivering both original material and covers spanning multiple eras. Among its studio efforts are the 2015 album Original and the 2019 holiday release March of the Kings.
The quartet originated at Saint John’s University in Minnesota and is fronted by founding vocalist Shaun Johnson. After coalescing in the mid-1990s, the group cultivated a nationwide audience via extensive live work and a series of self-released projects, among them Boston to Beijing in 2005, Just One of Those Days in 2009, and Something for the Rest of Us in 2019. Recognition followed in the form of induction into the Midwest Music Hall of Fame, along with a 2010 Emmy Award for a song featured in a Toys for Tots public-service announcement. The ensemble has appeared repeatedly on PBS in holiday broadcasts. Outside the quartet, Johnson leads his own genre-spanning octet, the Shaun Johnson Big Band Experience. Tonic Sol-Fa issued the EP All for One in 2020.
