Biography
A native of Malawi, Tony Bird fused contemporary Western genres with indigenous African traditions a full decade ahead of Paul Simon’s engagement with mbaqanga. Although his strong 1970s releases drew no attention when first issued, the wave of enthusiasm for African pop that arose in the late 1980s drew him back to the studio, where he recorded the album “Sorry Africa” (Philo 1135) in 1990.
