Biography
Tony Crombie earned recognition across Britain as a drummer, composer, and bandleader whose presence helped shape the local bebop movement. Listeners have also gravitated toward the film scores he supplied for productions such as Teenager Killer and The Nudist Story. His mother, who worked as a pianist during the silent-film era, may have sparked this blend of music and cinema. Crombie mastered both drums and piano without formal instruction, launching his professional life by supporting vocalists. Throughout the early 1950s he accompanied demanding jazz singers on their British tours, among them Lena Horne, Carmen McRae, and Annie Ross.
He formed Tony Crombie & the Rockets, active from 1954 through 1956, and later assembled a big band toward the end of the decade. Crombie proved adept at fusing jazz sensibilities with the pop currents of the 1950s and 1960s, generating an energetic and engaging style that drew notice from lounge and exotica enthusiasts. He composed music for nearly 40 episodes of the Man from Interpol television series. He operated his own publishing company, Gloucester Music, and issued recordings with his groups on Ember, Top Rank, and Decca.
