Born in St. Catherine, Jamaica, West Indies, Curtis relocated to Ocho Rios in 1991 and took part in a local talent contest together with DJ Jigsy King. He captured the Best Singer prize while King earned the top DJ spot. Their win prompted Barry O’Hare of Roof International to propose a recording session at his facility, yielding the successful single “Butterfly.” During his time with the Roof crew, Curtis also cut the haunting “Where Is The Love” alongside Stan Ryck. Following his Roof International achievements, he aligned with the Stone Love crew, which issued the probing “Do You Want To,” and by 1993 he had completed a tour of Japan. In 1997 the singer scored a Jamaican number 1 hit, “Missing You,” in combination with ARP and Beenie Man. One year afterward he secured an international hit with “My Lady In Red,” produced by Carl ‘Banton’ Nelson. While maintaining a thriving solo trajectory, Curtis became a member of the vocal group L.U.S.T. alongside Singing Melody, Thriller U and Lukie D. The combined performers declared their intention to restore the “flava back into reggae.” L.U.S.T. appeared at MIDEM 1998 and subsequently at New York’s third Culturama festival, where they received critical acclaim. Beyond his L.U.S.T. activities, Curtis strengthened his solo standing through a string of hits that encompassed “I Can Fly,” “Nobody,” “Love Should’ve Bought You Home,” “Home Alone,” “Sweet Lady,” “Party Time,” “Faith,” “Lose Your Woman,” “You Left Me Lonely,” and the collaboration with Merciless titled “Married Life.”
