Born in England, melodeon player Tony Hall enjoys widespread regard among folk musicians as the preeminent figure in his field, even though an unusually intermittent release schedule has kept his visibility lower than his reputation might suggest. Following the 1979 appearance of his first solo recording, the well-received Field Vole Music, he added his playing to Nic Jones’s Penguin Eggs as well as to Silly Sisters by Maddy Prior and June Tabor. Only in 1995 did his long-awaited follow-up arrive in the form of Mr Universe. The set drew material from Elizabethan-era songs, from jazz musician Humphrey Lyttelton’s catalog, and from the theme of an American film that supplied the album title, while also featuring standout interpretations of traditional numbers including “Jack Tar On Shore” and “A Blacksmith Courted Me.”
