Tony James, an English musician and producer who first gained notice in the punk and new wave eras through his bass work with Generation X and Sigue Sigue Sputnik, launched his career in 1975 by joining the short-lived British punk group London SS that also featured Brian James of the Damned, Mick Jones of the Clash, and Terry Chimes of the Clash. The next year he entered another fledgling punk band, Chelsea, where he encountered William Broad, soon to be known as Billy Idol, and together they established Generation X. That outfit earned distinction as one of the earliest punk acts to perform on Top of the Pops and released a consistent run of acclaimed singles until its dissolution in 1981. James subsequently produced a full-length release for Sex Gang Children and wrote the single “Russian Roulette” for Stiv Bators, frontman of Lords of the New Church. In 1982 he assembled the electro-glam punk band Sigue Sigue Sputnik with vocalist and fashion designer Martin Degville; the project delivered three Top 40 singles, among them “21st Century Boy” and “Love Missile F1-11,” whose profile rose further in 1986 when the track featured in the opening scenes of John Hughes’s hit teen comedy Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. James became a member of goth-rock ensemble Sisters of Mercy in 1990, contributing to their concluding studio album Vision Thing, and in 2002 he launched the punk rock duo Carbon/Silicon with his longtime associate Mick Jones.
