During the 1970s Tony Watts stood out among England’s reissue specialists as an unusually inventive presence. Working at Decca Records, this resourceful and perceptive producer delivered the first credible restorations of the Rolling Stones catalog, above all Rolled Gold—the British counterpart to Hot Rocks and More Hot Rocks at a time when neither collection had yet reached the U.K. market. In the years that followed he concentrated chiefly on jazz and pop recordings from the 1920s to the 1950s, while also overseeing projects in the classical repertoire, operetta, and related light-classical genres, bringing the same assurance to each field. A Tony Watts credit on any disc therefore signals the same standard of care associated with Colin Miles or Bill Inglot.
