Biography
Bay Area outfit Torrey fuses the hazy atmospheres of shoegaze with the direct appeal of indie rock, shaping densely layered pop that keeps tuneful hooks front and center. Fronted by brother-sister team Ryann and Kelly Gonsalves, the group moved beyond its bright, ringing early phase toward more reverberant, atmospheric textures on the self-titled 2024 sophomore album, which appeared on Slumberland.
Ryann and Kelly Gonsalves launched Torrey in 2018. The pair collaborated with numerous local players during the band’s formative stages, when its sound leaned toward shimmering indie pop. Both the 2019 EP Sister and the 2021 debut full-length Something Happy were tracked at the respected Tiny Telephone facility and issued independently. On the follow-up LP the Gonsalveses enlisted Matthew Ferrara of the Umbrellas, constructing a temporary home studio and devoting greater care to the recording process. The resulting self-titled album shifted further into shoegaze territory and reached listeners through Slumberland in March 2024.
