Biography
Australian punk outfit Totally Unicorn earned recognition through their volatile stage presence and intense sonic approach, shifting abruptly between raw vocal outbursts paired with aggressive riffing and intricate jazz-tinged math-rock rhythms, spanning their harsh first release in 2010 and the more exploratory Sorry issued early in 2019.
The group came together in 2010 with Drew Gardner handling vocals, Michael Bennett on drums, Clancy Tucker on guitar, and Robert Mudge on bass, then delivered their opening EP Horse Hugger within months. Early in 2011 Robert Mudge exited following a run of dates alongside Frenzal Rhomb, after which Tim McMahon stepped in on bass. The year closed with a three-way headline package alongside Gay Paris and God God Dammit Dammit that also produced the split EP Totally Gay Dammitt. In 2012 the band issued the phallic-shaped vinyl single “7 Inches” while original guitarist Clancy Tucker departed; subsequent shows included support slots with Pour Habit, Mad Caddies, and the Flatliners before Aaron Streatfeild and Kerim Erkin joined on guitar.
At the start of 2016 Tim McMahon left and was succeeded by Lee Nielson of Snakes Get Bad Press; the band then signed with indie label Farmer & the Owl and released their first album Dream Life later that year. Further personnel shifts occurred the next year when Michael Bennett departed and Adam Myers of Robotasaurus took over drums, while Kerim Erkin also exited and restored the lineup to a quartet. The stabilized unit toured nationally with Frenzal Rhomb and opened for the Dillinger Escape Plan before entering the studio. After the advance single “Grub,” Totally Unicorn put out their second album Sorry at the beginning of 2019.
