Biography
Virtuoso guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer Tim Reynolds launched TR3's original lineup in 1984, blending psychedelicized rock, funk, and prog into an unrestrained hybrid. Besides Reynolds as guitarist and frontman, the trio maintained an ever-shifting roster of supporting players; his principal recognition instead derived from partnerships with the Dave Matthews Band plus his own solo acoustic performances and joint acoustic appearances alongside Matthews. Consequently TR3 remained overshadowed, yet the band's independent touring still allowed Reynolds to advance his electric musical direction even without issuing recordings.
Following his relocation to North Carolina's Outer Banks during the mid-2000s, Reynolds encountered bassist Mick Vaughn and drummer Dan Martier. Through repeated rehearsals and road work the three coalesced into TR3's most stable and prominent configuration. Their performances juxtaposed Reynolds' idiosyncratic original material with distinctive reinterpretations of songs by James Brown, Led Zeppelin, King Crimson, and additional artists, thereby expanding the range and substance of their live sets.
After roughly two years of gigging and preparation during intervals when Reynolds was neither traveling alone nor collaborating with Matthews, TR3 issued its first full-length album, Radiance, in March 2009. Although Reynolds again joined Matthews for an acoustic duo tour that same year, the band commenced near-constant road activity in 2010 and captured every concert. The resulting double-length live recording, From Space and Beyond, surfaced in June 2011 and generated further touring commitments. Reynolds himself maintained an unbroken schedule, inserting solo dates and additional duo outings with Matthews between TR3 runs.
Early in 2014 TR3 secured a deal with ATO Records; the advance single "All Over the Place" followed in August. The group's second studio album, Like Some Kind of Alien Invasion, arrived in October of that year.
