Biography
Having taken up residence in the Bronx at the age of eight, soul siren Traedonya developed her affinity for hip-hop through exposure to Run-D.M.C. Hip-hop legend Pumpkin encountered the 13-year-old during one of her rapping performances and arranged an introduction to Aaron Fuchs, resulting in the 1986 release of her debut single, "Do the Boogaloo," on his Tuff City imprint. Subsequent collaborations included work with X-Clan as well as a stint as lead singer of Sample This!, whose self-titled album appeared on Elektra in 1993. Once that group disbanded, Traedonya turned to jazz instruction from Bernard "Pretty" Purdie, Chico Hamilton, and Reggie Workman. She merged those jazz and hip-hop foundations with funk and house music to unveil her evolved style on the single "Beloved," issued by Prohibition in 2003.
