An insurgent country outfit known as Trailer Bride originated in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, under the leadership of vocalist and composer Melissa Swingle, who had previously participated in the female threesome called Pussy Teeth. After the dissolution of that group, Swingle transitioned from playing bass to taking up the guitar, commenced composing original material, and established Trailer Bride during 1993 alongside upright bass player Daryl White. A series of percussionists preceded the arrival of Brad Goolsby in the ensemble; once lead guitarist Bryon Settle was incorporated, the group's membership reached its final configuration. The band's inaugural release, a self-titled effort, came out toward the end of 1996 via Walt Records, after which they moved to Bloodshot to produce the succeeding album Smelling Salts in 1998. The following year saw the emergence of Whine de Lune, an album tracked alongside fresh guitarist Scott Goolsby. In the middle of 2001, High Seas was put out by Bloodshot Records.
