Transient Waves is a Philadelphia-rooted trio whose sound hovers in the space separating ambient electronica from trippy psychedelia, avoiding any decisive lean toward either pole. The group draws clear inspiration from the droning, hypnotic textures pioneered by Spacemen 3 and My Bloody Valentine; although the style had already solidified by the mid-’90s, Transient Waves adds little that feels novel while still executing the approach with conviction. Loren Jackson’s heavily processed guitar, surging and receding in Robert Fripp-like swells of gauzy tone, serves as the only prominent element, while Eric Campbell’s drums and Syd Tucker’s breathy vocals remain buried nearly to the point of inaudibility. Following several compilation appearances, the band issued the extended EP Wading and Waiting in early 1997 as part of Darla Records’ ambient-pop series The Bliss-Out Series, soon accompanied by the limited-edition 10-inch You Have to Dance With the Devil. Later the same year they moved to the British experimental imprint Fat Cat, which released the Born With a Body and Fucked in the Head EP—complete with remixes by U.K. producer/DJs Andy Weatherall and Steve Stasis—in December, then issued the full-length debut Sonic Narcotic the following year.
