Emerging from Montreal, Canada, Tricky Woo aligned with other garage rock revivalists of the 1990s, including the Unband, the Streetwalkin' Cheetahs, and the Gaza Strippers, by adapting the MC5 and Stooges guitar rock of the 1970s for new listeners. The band formed in 1996, consisting of frontman Andrew Dickson, bassist and vocalist Eric Larock, guitarist Adrian Popovich—who later departed—and drummer Pat Conan. Through notorious live shows, nonstop tours, and a series of independent label releases, Tricky Woo established a reputation for delivering high-energy rock and roll. From 1997 to 1999 the group put out three albums in successive years: Rock and Roll Music Part One in 1997, The Enemy is Real in 1998, and Sometimes I Cry in 1999. Of these releases, Sometimes I Cry created the strongest interest, its psychedelic cover painted by Dickson himself. The record combines sexually charged lyrics with grinding psychedelic punk, drawing extensive attention to the Canadian band from outlets in the United States and Europe.
