Trigger Hippy emerged in Nashville as an informal collective sparked by Black Crowes drummer Steve Gorman, Black Crowes guitarist Audley Freed, and Nashville session bassist Nick Govrik. Their first public performance took place in 2009 at the Cox Capitol Theatre in Macon, Georgia, after Widespread Panic guitarist Jimmy Herring joined the lineup. Herring soon stepped away because of touring duties with Widespread Panic, prompting the addition of vocalist Joan Osborne alongside singer, songwriter, Black Crowes guitarist, and multi-instrumentalist Jackie Greene. Freed exited during spring 2012; Will Kimbrough filled the guitar chair for a short stretch before first-call Nashville session guitarist Tom Bukovac completed the roster that cut the self-titled debut album issued by Rounder Records in 2014. With Osborne and Greene supplying potent lead vocals, the ensemble’s grounded roots foundation—blending R&B, soul, country, and Southern jam-band textures—positioned Trigger Hippy for strong commercial and critical prospects. Greene exited in 2015 and Osborne followed in 2017, after which vocalist Amber Woodhouse and guitarist/vocalist Ed Jurdi joined for the 2019 release Full Circle and Then Some.
