In the early 1950s accordionist Carlos André Batista launched Trio Mossoró after settling in Rio de Janeiro and recruiting his siblings João Batista, performing as João Mossoró, and Hermelinda Batista, who appeared as Ana Paula; Batista had already played Rádio Tapuyo in Mossoró, Rio Grande do Norte. The ensemble adopted the name of their native city, and Carlos André’s earlier broadcasts on Mayrink Veiga and Nacional helped secure their place in the capital. Recognition arrived in 1954 when a ceremony at the Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro conferred upon them the distinguished Euterpe trophy. Their inaugural LP, Rua do Namoro, appeared in 1962. Success followed with Northeastern rhythms grouped under the forró banner, yielding popular releases such as Trinta Dias de Forró and Forró do Mexe-Mexe. After the trio disbanded in 1972 its members embarked on separate careers.
