Russian classical ensemble Trio Voronezh originated in 1993 when Vladimir Volochin on domra, Valerie Petruchin on double-bass balalaika, and Sergei Teleshev on bajan came together. All three had completed their studies at the Academy of Music in Voronezh outside of Moscow. During a 1996 performance in a Frankfurt, Germany subway, representatives from the Oregon Bach Festival spotted the musicians and promptly arranged an American engagement. Audiences responded enthusiastically to sets that moved from Vivaldi and Schubert through Russian folk and pop selections, allowing the ensemble to build support throughout North America and Europe. Their first recording, A Special Arrangement, appeared in 1998, with Simply Classic and a self-titled release arriving shortly afterward.
