Biography
Operating out of Los Angeles, David Flores adopts the Truncate alias when venturing into raw, booming techno that occasionally drifts into trippy territory. After launching both the Truncate name and its associated label near the start of the 2010s, he has issued dozens of singles and EPs, contributed mixes to numerous podcasts, and performed at clubs and festivals including Fabric in London, Movement in Detroit, and Output in New York. During this period he has also issued joint tracks with Jimmy Edgar (“Submission,” 2015), Ben Sims (under the Assailants name), James Ruskin (Sketch, 2021), Josh Wink (“Let Go,” 2022), and several others.
Flores first encountered electronic music as a teenager in the early 1990s. He spent years spinning records at warehouse parties throughout Southern California before turning to production in the mid-2000s. His debut arrived on the Monoïd label in 2005 via the Audioinjection EP, after which he continued releasing material as Audio Injection, including multiple records on Droid Recordings. He held a residency at the Interface series alongside Droid founders Drumcell and Raíz, with whom he also recorded collaborative tracks. In addition, he produced hardcore under the Broken Rules moniker and placed releases on Lenny Dee’s Industrial Strength and IST imprints.
Flores introduced the Truncate project in 2011, directing it toward “deep, raw techno.” He began with a run of minimal white-label singles on his own label and soon added joint releases with Raíz, Developer, and John Tejada on Droid and Modularz. Several appearances followed on Modeselektor’s 50Weapons, among them the 2014 Pressurize EP and a 2015 split single alongside Benjamin Damage. The Jimmy Edgar collaboration “Submission” appeared on Ultramajic, while the 2018 Chase Sequences EP documented his Assailants work with Ben Sims. Further output surfaced on James Ruskin’s Blueprint, including the 2021 joint Sketch, and on Catz N’ Dogz’s Pets Recordings. Token issued the DTW 2 LAX EP in 2021, and Ovum hosted the Wink collaboration “Be Aware.” Additional 2022 titles on his own label comprised the EPs Basal and The Drill, while CLR released The Heights EP and Intact (both with Drumcell and Chris Liebing) plus another Wink track, “Let Go.”
