Ty Sycáci emerged in Brno during 2000 as a risk-embracing, unconventional alternative-rock and avant-rock trio whose Czech-language songs might evoke the Mothers of Invention if that band had merged punk energy with East European folk traditions. Their output matches creativity with eccentricity, a quality apparent even to listeners unfamiliar with Czech. Lead singer and founder Petr Vása assembled the group by recruiting guitarist Petr Zavadil and bassist Tomás Fröhlich, none of whom relied on a conventional drummer—an approach that sets them apart from the overwhelming majority of rock ensembles regardless of national origin. Instead the trio constructs its sound from vocals, electric guitar, and electric bass, supplementing these elements only occasionally with assorted percussion. Prior to the band’s formation each member had already participated in other Czech projects: Vása had led Z-kopce and Osklid, while Zavadil and Fröhlich had previously played in Pluto. Vása’s artistic pursuits extend beyond music into what observers term “physical poetry,” an avant-garde performance-art practice he integrates into Ty Sycáci’s concerts by producing percussive effects on his chest or cheeks. The trio’s live presentations are renowned for their dramatic theatricality, culminating in a self-developed work labeled a “punk opera” and titled SSSS—an abbreviation of Samota, Sláva, Smrt, Spása that translates as solitude, glory, death, and salvation. Shortly after forming, the group signed with Indies Records, the modest Brno independent label active since 1990 in chronicling Czech music. Indies issued the debut album Máj v Debnu in 2000 and followed it the next year with the sophomore release Lék a Jed.
