Typhoon Ferri came together during the spring of 1999 and began touring professionally the following year. Every member arrived with prior stage experience at a high level. For two years Mark McInnis had led a well-received Boston-based group whose college-stadium performances across New England placed the band alongside the Lemonheads, Rustic Overtones, and God Street Wine at such rooms as Harpers Ferry, Middle East, and The Paradise Rock Club. Drummer Tyler Montgomery had already shared stages with the world-renowned band Roots and, at the age of ten, sat in with Santana on an East Coast tour; by 2000 he was also performing with the Vermont funk project Royal Jive. Bassist Aaron Ferri had supplied the rhythmic foundation for the regionally popular Buffalo Super 7, a group that regularly appeared at T.T. the Bear's Place in Boston and Lupos in Rhode Island. Ferri characterizes Typhoon Ferri as a "classic rock-influenced band with a little blues/funk flavor." The ensemble's name itself merges Montgomery's nickname "the Rhythm Typhoon" with Ferri's surname. The band quickly established a strong presence throughout the Boston area, an influence that reached a national audience when The Boston Globe noted that its song "Infamous" ranked as the most-downloaded track on the www.Boston.com MP3 Music section in March 2000. In April 2000 Typhoon Ferri issued its debut album on the Wishbone Records label.
