Biography
Formed in Chicago, the instrumental trio Typical Sisters crafts atmospheric soundscapes that blend jazz traditions with the expansive textures of 1990s post-rock, the motorik pulses of Krautrock, and the spacious elegance found on landmark ECM recordings from the 1970s. Anchored by longtime associates Gregory Uhlmann on guitar, Clark Sommers on bass, and Matt Carroll on drums, the group first appeared in 2016 via its self-titled debut and has since broadened its reach through subsequent releases including Hungry Ghost in 2018 and Love Beam in 2021.
The project’s origins trace to informal sessions in the mid-2000s, when the three Chicago natives convened to explore ideas. At the time, Uhlmann was completing high school, Carroll had come back from his enrollment at the University of Miami, and Sommers—a CalArts alumnus who later collaborated with vocalist Kurt Elling—had returned briefly from New York City during a holiday break. Their immediate rapport prompted ongoing contact, and they periodically reconvened over the following ten years. After Uhlmann earned his own CalArts degree and Sommers along with Carroll resettled permanently in Chicago, the musicians documented their work with the 2016 album Typical Sisters. Two years afterward came the similarly wide-ranging Hungry Ghost, while 2021 brought the glitch-infused and exploratory Love Beam.
