UK Decay combined artistic theatrical elements with aggressive thrash-punk when they launched their initial recording with the Black EP during the beginning of 1980. The group's roster at that time included Abbo on vocals and guitar, Steve Harle handling drums, Martyn Smith on bass, along with Steve Spon contributing on five-string guitar and keyboards. Following the release of a pair of independent singles, the death of Smith led to a rapid sequence of bassists: first Lol, then Dutch, and finally Eddie Branch. Fresh Records put out their debut album, For Madmen Only, in October 1981. With the 1982 appearance of the Rising From the Dead EP, the ensemble distanced itself even more from its original musical approach. By year's end the members had disbanded, and all except Spon went on to establish Slave Drive, which subsequently transformed into Furyo. Meanwhile, Spon started the project In Excelsis.
