Drawing members from earlier outfits such as Three Summers Gone, Nexus Six, and Living War Room, Under a Dying Sun came together in San Francisco in 1999. Guitarists Konane and Dan, drummer Jerry, bassist Shaye, and vocalist Macklan formed the five-piece unit, channeling their accumulated experience and raw drive into heavy, forceful material. The band quickly earned a strong reputation for its live performances, attracting a loyal following through relentless touring and themes rooted in punk rock. After issuing two 7-inch singles, the musicians entered the studio for their first CD, the Hangman's Fun EP, which appeared on Unfun Records in late 2000. Continuing to play throughout the Bay Area club circuit, the quintet kept enlarging its audience while preparing a debut full-length. Substandard Records released that self-titled album, Under a Dying Sun, in July 2002.
