Biography
Uni Boys fuse their precisely executed power pop with a punk-edged glam approach that draws upon Johnny Thunders' guitar tone from the New York Dolls, the lush vocal blends of Big Star, and the adolescent bravado of Milk 'N' Cookies. Years of refining their skills through demo sessions and immersion in influences spanning punk to intense 1960s psychedelia preceded the release of their lively 2022 album Do It All Next Week. Their October 2023 effort Buy This Now! likewise embodied the convergence of punk outlook and melodic pop craftsmanship.
Reza Matin on bass and Noah Nash on guitar launched the project while still in high school in Southern California. As dedicated listeners they chose to create music of their own and soon added classmate Arthur Fitch on drums, initially calling the group Uniform. Early performances focused on rapid, minimal punk, yet exposure to 1960s psychedelic sounds and 1970s power pop encouraged more deliberate composition. Retaining a punky, glammy, occasionally raw texture that echoed Johnny Thunders, Big Star harmonies, and Milk 'N' Cookies attitude, the trio—now renamed Uni Boys—captured enough material for two albums during the initial COVID-19 period in 2020. Working at home on an eight-track cassette recorder with Matin and Nash jointly handling songwriting and lead vocals, Heavy Handed and Rock & Roll Music revealed a band steeped in earlier traditions yet energized by fresh discovery. These tapes attracted interest from power pop enthusiasts and imprints alike. Curation Records in Los Angeles proposed reissuing the existing sets, but the musicians requested instead that the label issue a collection of fresh recordings. After bassist Michael Cipolletti joined and Matin shifted to guitar, the band moved sessions to a laptop setup, sharpening the looser edges of prior work. Curation released Do It All Next Week in September 2022. For the follow-up the group enlisted Brian and Michael D'Addario of the Lemon Twigs as co-producers, resulting in Buy This Now!'s more concise arrangements and richer harmonic texture.
