Biography
Describing themselves as a "punk-jazz-rock-experimental" ensemble, Unknown Instructors unite the storied Minutemen rhythm section—bassist Mike Watt and drummer George Hurley—with Saccharine Trust guitarist Joe Baiza and poet-saxophonist Dan McGuire for an inventive duel of sophisticated musical intellects. Smog Veil Records issued the Unknown Instructors album The Way Things Work in 2005, complete with extra guest vocals from Saccharine Trust associate Jack Brewer, presenting what appeared to be free-form improvisation while actually embedding a precise analysis of Dadaist ideas in a manner that would have amused both Captain Beefheart and John Coltrane.
