Biography
Formed as a post-punk quartet, Unto Ashes blends folk and electronic components into darkwave's enigmatic atmosphere, while their elaborate Arabic vocalizations generate rich wordplay visuals. Although likened to Depeche Mode, Dead Can Dance, and the Rachels, Unto Ashes cultivates a distinctive gothic romanticism. The group's self-titled debut emerged independently during 1997, after which they performed at multiple festivals and contributed to numerous goth rock compilations in the closing years of the decade. October 1999 saw the arrival of their second album, Moon Oppose Moon, succeeded by the spring 2000 issuance of the limited-edition Forever Sick EP. A contract with Projekt was signed in July 2000, prompting a September reissue of Moon Oppose Moon. Summer 2001 brought Saturn Return, and Empty into White came next in 2003 before Grave Blessings arrived in 2005. The 2006 album Songs for a Widow included a melancholic rendition of the Covenant synth pop classic "One World One Sky."
