Biography
Hailing from Moseley in Birmingham, West Midlands, England, Urban South formed a four-piece crew that became the first authentic rap act to land on the diverse Yorkshire imprint Nation Records. A bare-bones demo alone secured them high-visibility opening slots alongside touring American headliners Ice-T and Brand Nubian, placing MCs Mayhem, Embro, Govna G and DJ KDX (b. USA) in position to clinch a contract. Their cause was further advanced by a self-made video that MTV picked up and kept in regular rotation for several months ahead of the official signing. The Whatever’s Clever EP served as their opening statement and quickly drew praise from both specialist titles and the broader UK music press, including a Single Of The Week nod from Melody Maker.
