Biography
Uri Gurvich, an alto saxophonist and jazz composer, entered the world in Israel, where he spent his formative years and first took up the saxophone at age 10. His training began at the Rimon School in Israel, after which he joined the Tel Aviv Jazz Orchestra, remaining there until his 2003 relocation to Boston in the United States to enroll at Berklee College of Music. While at Berklee he worked under the guidance of Joe Lovano and Herb Pomeroy, ultimately earning his degree with honors. Gurvich then settled in Brooklyn and established a steady presence performing with numerous groups throughout the New York City region, while simultaneously building a profile on the worldwide jazz festival circuit that carried both the musician and his folk-jazz approach across the U.S., Europe, Japan, and additional territories. In 2009 John Zorn’s Tzadik Records issued his first album as a leader, The Storyteller, which included Francisco Mela on drums, Leo Genovese on piano, Peter Slavov on bass, and tenor saxophonist Chris Cheek as a guest.
