Biography
The husband-and-wife duo Utah Carol, an indie rock outfit named after a classic cowboy ballad, consists of Grant Birkenbeuel and JinJa Davis. The pair began composing material together in 1995 and formed the band in Chicago in 1997. Their debut album, Wonderwheel, appeared on Orchard Records in June 1999; the track “My Fear” was selected for The Rough Guide to Americana, while “Mabel Custer” was placed in the film All the Real Girls. Van Dyke Parks produced the group’s second release, Comfort for the Traveler, which came out on their own Stomping Ground label on April 22, 2002. Rodeo Queen, their third album, followed on May 15, 2007, shortly before the band’s music was again licensed for the films Kabluey and Love and Mary.
