UUVVWWZ, whose name is pronounced “double U, double V, double double U, Zee,” produce music that nearly matches the eccentricity of that moniker. Drawing from the off-kilter approach of Deerhoof, Micachu, and Kap Bambino, the quartet favors irregular song forms, sharp-angled guitar lines, abrupt rhythmic shifts, and urgent, shouted vocals. Guitarist Jim Schroeder, bassist Dustin Wilbourn, drummer Tom Ambroz, and vocalist Teal Gardner came together in Lincoln, Nebraska, during 2007. Within that same year they composed nine tracks and arranged studio time, yet Teal was poised to depart for college. She ultimately remained once the self-titled album approached completion, and after a brief East Coast tour the group slated the record for release on the local independent label It Are Good Records. Robb Nansel, who heads Omaha’s Saddle Creek Records, learned of their raucous performances and arranged a meeting to offer the band a contract. Following an amicable split from It Are Good, the musicians relocated to the same imprint that houses Cursive and Bright Eyes; Criteria bassist A.J. Mogis then handled the remix, and Saddle Creek issued the album on June 7, 2009.
