New York native Chris Leo, sibling to Ted Leo and Danny Leo, had previously fronted the indie rock outfits the Van Pelt and the Lapse during the closing years of the 1990s before establishing Vague Angels. What began as an assembly of players assisting in the 2004 recording of his album Truth Loved—credited to the imaginary group the Breaks drawn from his debut novel—later evolved under Leo’s direction into a complete ensemble through the inclusion of songwriter Young-Ah Kim along with guitarist and keyboardist Gary Keating and drummer Patrick Brennan. Pretty Activity Records issued the band’s inaugural full-length effort, the acoustic-leaning Let’s Duke It Out at Kilkenny Katz that highlights Leo’s lyrical narratives, during the spring of 2006, aligning with the arrival of his follow-up publication.
