Valerie Brown, a multi-instrumentalist originally from Pocatello, Idaho City, started out performing on flute and piccolo before shifting her primary focus in later years to vocals along with acoustic guitar and keyboards. In the early '70s she left a Portland college and became a member of the regional band Moonstone, where her contributions spanned singing, guitar, flute, and percussion. Following the group's modest local achievements, she departed to establish the vocal trio Betty Romaine. Her first solo album, Uneasy Sleep, appeared on Louie Records in 1999, and she has also lent her talents to other projects including J. Michael Kersey's Suite for the Columbia Gorge, R. Moore's Nowhatnow, People's Choice's Turn Me Loose, and Dave Storrs & the Tone Sharks' Ten Stories.
