Biography
Valravn traces its origins not to the folktronica style it performs today, but to an earlier acoustic medieval ensemble named Valeria that performed at fairs and toured villages along with small towns. That project later evolved into the far more electronic Valravn, whose name comes from the supernatural raven of Scandinavian mythology, and whose live shows frequently feature a giant raven alongside the musicians. After issuing a demo CD, the group made its formal debut in 2007 via a self-titled album that showcased the vocals of Anna Katrin Egilstrød, whose singing recalls Björk and matches the darker tone of much of the music. The record blended traditional pieces with original songs while pairing acoustic instruments against samples and electronica. Extensive European touring at festivals and on the road followed, leading in 2009 to a deal with the German label Westpark and the release of the band’s second album, Koder På Snor, which contained solely original compositions.
