Emerging with a lean, elemental approach that distills post-punk and noise pop into their rawest, most propulsive melodic forms, the London-based trio Value Void—originally hailing from Argentina—appeared complete upon delivering their first album, Sentimental, in 2018.

Long before the group began writing together, vocalist and guitarist Paz Maddio and drummer Marta Zabala had been close since childhood in Argentina. Zabala came to London while touring with Los Cripis and chose to remain; Maddio joined her shortly afterward. In 2017 the pair teamed with bassist Luke Tristam, whose Unwork imprint had already put out Los Cripis’ 2014 album Los Cripis Long Play, and began performing under the name WVS.

Concentrating on reducing their arrangements to essentials, Maddio layered jagged post-punk lines over Zabala’s lyrics. The three soon entered the studio, where Younghusband’s Euan Hinshelwood engineered seven tracks across a few days. After circulating the recordings, they were signed by London’s Tough Love label, which issued the band’s debut single, “Back in the Day,” in May 2018. Following a run of shows supporting Frankie Cosmos, the musicians returned to Hinshelwood to refine the existing material and record two additional pieces, resulting in the nine-song album Sentimental, released at the end of 2018.
