Vaughan Mason, a multi-instrumentalist who also produced and engineered, oversaw the 21st Century, the ensemble remembered above all for its 1975 RCA release “Remember the Rain,” a signature Chicago soul ballad. Relocating from Chicago to New York, Mason took up work as an audio engineer and contributed to B.T. Express sessions. He next formed the short-lived Vaughn Mason & Crew, which secured a Brunswick Records deal; fronted by Jerome Bell, the outfit scored with “Bounce, Skate, Rock, Roll,” a track that reached number five R&B and number 81 pop in early 1980. The similarly titled album climbed to number 25 R&B later that year, though follow-ups “Roller Skate” and “Jammin’ Big Guitar” made smaller impressions. On Salsoul, Mason and Butch Dayo later placed two charting R&B singles—“You Can Do It” in late 1982 and “Party on the Corner” in spring 1983. Mason subsequently launched Raze, whose Columbia house single “Break 4 Love” reached the Top 24 R&B in fall 1988. From the close of the decade through the 1990s he continued lending support to recordings by Doug Lazy, Pam Shelby, and DJ Pope.
