Biography
Venomous Concept emerged in 2004 as an extreme metal and hardcore punk supergroup whose members have longstanding connections to Brutal Truth, Napalm Death, the Melvins, Fantômas, and Nuclear Assault. Since its formation the band has issued five studio albums of unyielding intensity, among them Poisoned Apple in 2008, Kick Me Silly VCIII in 2016, and Good Ship Lollipop in 2023. Its lineup has continually shifted around two fixed members: Brutal Truth vocalist Kevin Sharp and Napalm Death guitarist Shane Embury.
The project took its name as a tribute to the Oregon punk legends Poison Idea. Sharp and Embury launched the group after discovering common ground through beer, pizza, and shared admiration for punk touchstones such as Black Flag and Poison Idea. They quickly enlisted Danny Lilker on bass and Danny Herrera on drums, both from Brutal Truth, along with Buzz Osborne of the Melvins on guitar. A recording contract followed with Mike Patton’s Ipecac Recordings, the Melvins’ own label at the time. The debut full-length, Retroactive Abortion, arrived in 2004 and was succeeded by split releases with the Japanese grindcore band 324 in 2006 and with Blood Duster in 2008. After Osborne departed, the remaining members pressed ahead and delivered their second album, Poisoned Apple, later that year.
The third studio effort, Kick Me Silly: VC III, marked the band’s first release for Season of Mist and surfaced in 2016. In 2020 Venomous Concept issued Politics Versus the Election, a record of caustic political commentary and satire featuring core members Embury and Sharp alongside drummer Herrera and guitarist John Cooke of Corrupt Moral Altar. For the fifth album, the raw and unrelenting Good Ship Lollipop released in 2023, Cancer drummer Carl Stokes joined Embury, Sharp, and Cooke.
