Biography
Vernell Brown's professional trajectory launched with notable early momentum, though advancement has tapered in later years. As a teenager, he attracted attention by stepping in as pianist at the NARAS-sponsored Grammy In The Schools event, which prompted Jerry Moss to discover him and offer an A&M contract that yielded two albums. Before that breakthrough, Brown began piano lessons at age four, then concentrated chiefly on drums between six and thirteen. Once he returned to piano, instruction from Terry Trotter and Charlie Shoemake accelerated his growth. He advanced to finalist status in both the 1988 and 1989 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competitions. His first A&M album, A Total Eclipse, spanned multiple jazz idioms with a touch of funk, while the 1990 follow-up Stay Tuned shifted toward an r&b emphasis. Vernell Brown has since cultivated a lower-than-expected profile, yet considerable potential persists.
