Born in 1975 in the United States, Martell grew up absorbing vocalists through radio broadcasts and vinyl, which prompted her to pursue music professionally. She has recalled those early inspirations as Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Sarah Vaughan and Nancy Wilson. As her formal training advanced, however, she shifted toward contemporary pop, internalizing the approaches of Anita Baker, Patti LaBelle, James Taylor and additional artists. Throughout the 1990s she resided and performed in New York City at nightclubs and assorted stages. She also made a notable trip to Denmark, where she performed at the Copenhagen Blues Festival in 2002.

Her parallel development as a songwriter has mirrored the breadth of her vocal influences. That eclecticism extends to her compositions, which encompass theatre, radio, film and television. Beyond her full-length releases, she issued the well-received 2003 single “Too Young For The Blues” and contributed the duet “It’s Alright With Me” to Kevin Mahogany’s 2004 album Big Band.
