Biography
Formed in 2015 at the Colburn School in Los Angeles, the Viano Quartet secured the institution’s first artists-in-residence appointment and has maintained the same personnel ever since: violinists Hao Zhou and Lucy Wang, violist Aiden Kane, and cellist Tate Zawadiuk. The ensemble’s name combines syllables drawn from the four string instruments. Early contest results came swiftly, with a third-place finish at the Osaka International Chamber Music Competition in 2017 followed by the silver medal at the 2018 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition in South Bend, Indiana. A decisive 2019 season brought first prizes at both the ENKOR International Music Competition in London and the Banff International String Quartet Competition in Canada; the Banff victory in particular opened doors to major stages such as the Konzerthaus in Berlin, Wigmore Hall in London, and the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in suburban Los Angeles.
Additional residencies have included Northern Michigan University, the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia during 2021–2022, the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University in 2022–2023, and the Bowers Program of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, scheduled from 2024 through 2027. The group is now based in New York and has collaborated with pianists Marc-André Hamelin, Inon Barnatan, and Emanuel Ax. Its first recording, the album Portraits, appeared on the Curtis Studio label in 2023, the same year the members completed their studies at the Curtis Institute.
